But the story beats, the puzzles and the enemies and traps, are still the very core of the innovative, quirky game. There are some new features, such as a completely revamped interface with better shortcuts for secondary items, such as grenades and stim patches. And, of course, you can play games on Steam, GOG, or Epic instead of finding an ancient CD-ROM. You can blast and pipe-bash enemies, but they’re not wolfenstein-era 2-d sprites now. You can punch 0451 into the medical storage locker like it’s 1994, but this time at a modern resolution and frame rate, using more comfortable controls, even a gamepad. If you’ve played and liked the original, then this demo, and possibly the full game, is almost certainly worth your time. After spending a few hours in the first level, I’m definitely impressed but curious about some of the decisions and focus areas. I’ve been looking forward to revisiting Citadel Station and its malevolent AI ever since the project was announced nearly seven years ago. No one was expecting to see the pc demo system shock Remake this week, at least me.
